Hairballs aren't just a mess to clean up — for indoor cats grooming all day, it's about helping that swallowed hair move the right way: through the gut, not back up.
Cats can spend a huge share of their waking hours grooming, and indoor cats — especially long- and medium-haired ones — swallow a lot of loose hair doing it. Most of that hair should simply pass through and leave in the stool. Hairballs happen when it lingers and clumps in the stomach instead.
